3. Head Unit Installation Requirements and Operational Considerations

Installation/Set Up Steps

The GreaseBoss Head Unit is designed to remain fitted to a dedicated grease gun. Once installed, the Head Unit should remain attached to the grease gun during normal operations and only be removed when maintenance, repair, or replacement is required.

Installation of the Head Unit onto the grease gun to enable grease event tracking and tag interaction requires the following:

    1. Install the Head Unit Charger in a location near the Gateway and within syncing range
    2. Securely mount the Head Unit
    3. Verify correct positioning
    4. Confirm power
    5. Connect the Head Unit to the charger to synchronise with the Gateway and download account data
    6. Keep the Head Unit on the charger when not in use to ensure it regularly synchronises and receives account updates
    7. The Head Unit is remotely accessible by GreaseBoss Support when connected to the charger and within Gateway range, allowing firmware updates and remote support

Selecting a Suitable Grease Gun

Before installation, ensure the grease gun selected for use with the Head Unit is in good working condition and appropriate for the application. The Head Unit can be fitted to both manual and electric grease guns when supplied with the correct adapter.

Consider the following:

    • The grease gun should be mechanically sound, with no leaks or damaged fittings.
    • The grease gun should be dedicated to a single grease type wherever possible.
    • The make and model of the grease gun should be confirmed to ensure the correct mounting adapter is available.

Using a dedicated grease gun helps maintain grease type integrity and reduces the risk of cross-contamination between lubricants.

Power and Communications

The Head Unit contains an internal rechargeable battery and communicates with the GreaseBoss Gateway to receive scheduled lubrication tasks and upload completed greasing records.

Prior to commissioning:

    • Ensure the Head Unit is adequately charged.
    • Confirm a Gateway has been installed and commissioned.
    • Verify the Head Unit can successfully communicate with the Gateway.
    • Ensure the correct grease type has been assigned to the Head Unit within the GreaseBoss system.

Maintaining battery charge and communication capability ensures lubrication data is synchronised correctly and operators always receive current work instructions.

Dedicated Equipment Management

For best results, each Head Unit should remain paired with a dedicated grease gun and assigned grease type.

This approach:

    • Prevents accidental use of the wrong lubricant.
    • Improves data accuracy.
    • Simplifies operator training.
    • Reduces equipment setup time at the beginning of each shift.

Where multiple grease types are used on site, separate grease guns and Head Units should be clearly identified and managed according to site lubrication practices.

Storage Between Shifts

When not in use, the Head Unit and grease gun should be stored together in a clean, secure location.

Recommended storage practices include:

    • Store indoors or in a weather-protected area where practical.
    • Protect the unit from direct rain, excessive dust, and physical damage.
    • Place the grease gun in a rack, cabinet, or designated storage location to prevent accidental drops.
    • Ensure the coupler and nozzle are protected from contamination.
    • Keep the Head Unit connected to the Charger when not in use to maintain operational readiness, ensure syncing with the Gateway and enable remote support and updates.

Care and Handling

Although designed for industrial environments, the Head Unit contains electronic components and should be treated as a precision device.

Operators should:

    • Avoid using the Head Unit as a carrying handle.
    • Avoid dropping or throwing the Head Unit.
    • Inspect the assembly regularly for loose fittings or visible damage.
    • Report damaged screens, housings, charging ports, or connectors.
    • Keep charging and communication interfaces clean and free from debris.

Regular inspection and proper storage will maximise service life and ensure reliable operation throughout the life of the system.

Before Commencing Normal Operations

Prior to placing the system into service:

    • Confirm the Head Unit is securely fitted.
    • Verify the Head Unit has recently synced with the Gateway.
    • Ensure all grease points have been tagged and configured.
    • Confirm the correct grease type assignment.
    • Complete commissioning and test activities before commencing routine lubrication tasks.

Once these checks have been completed, the Head Unit will provide operators with scheduled lubrication instructions and record greasing activity for reporting and analysis within the GreaseBoss platform.
